Dragoncon Swag n Seek

Another one of the major projects I did was hexie tags for Dragoncon. I did make 25 costers from the smaller hexagons but then I had cut some larger 3 1/2 hexies and made these cute tags out of them with a bit of batting, a stabilizer and a piece of ribbon. They were super easy to make and super cute.

In the end, I made 300 of them to give away and hada blast doing it. The two weeks before Dragoncon I did nothing but make tags. Everyone who found them or I swapped with loved them. I'm not planning on going back next year but I am going to make more of these.

The con was a blast and I have tons of photos if anyone wants to see them. I think the best part is hanging out with my friends. I got a lot of swag from just the swap meet and then shared it back out to all my friends that didn't go. I plan to make a shadow box to display some of the items I got.

First Swag N Seek Find

So I found something to use the hexies I've been making. I don't think this will be the only thing I do with them but it is a good start. I love going to Dragoncon on labor day weekend. It is one of my favorites conventions. In the last several years a group has gotten together and does what is dubbed Swag n Seek. It's basically making or giving small swag items away for free. The most common is to randomly hide it in the various con areas for people to find. They also do meetups during the convention to swap items.

Last year was my first year hearing about this and I came away with some of the best con swag ever from this. I didn't know about it ahead of time so I didn't get a chance to make anything for it but my friend who runs one of the dealer's booths is fast at making jewelry and had me run around as her swag fairy.

This year I'm getting prepared. I decided to do somethingI'm good at. Sew! I'm using the hexies for coasters. I'm trying to use up my scraps and I have several fandom fabrics that would work wonders with this project. I have about 9 coasters together so far and have about 7 more planned out. The best part of doing this is since the hexies are being EPP'd I can do this while I'm out with my friends. We regularly meet twice a week and I always loose sewing time. This is a good hand project that lets me keep my hands busy during our nights out.

One of my local quilt shops does a regular sit N stitch several times a week. One of those is after work on Tues so sometimes I go there. I'm enjoying the slow pace and I feel like at this point I will have something fun to share at the con this year.

A Million Hexies

I didn't do many things in April. I had a trip to Washington DC and didn't get much done. I did get a chance to go through and sort my scraps. That's when I got the idea of making a million hexies. Well probably not actually a million but I know it will feel like it when I'm done.

I read a while back where one quilter would go ahead and cut hexies out of her scraps after a project before going on. I thought this would be a good way to control the size of my scrap pieces. If they are smaller then my hexie template I will toss them unless I'm starting something immediately with them. If they are the size of a fat quarter I'm putting them in the stash for later. Anything between the two sizes will but cut up.

This controls the number of tiny pieces I keep and I'll have a lot of hexies for an EPP or well whatever I end up doing with them. For now, they're in a basket nearby. I figure one day I'll find a cute scrappy idea I can do with them. I may even get ambitious enough to make a grandma's flower garden with them.
